A European project

Playing a Part is the first European project realised by ILL partly funded by the European programme for Life Long Learning Grundtvig. It is an international collaboration with the Catalan theatre company Teatre de l’Enjòlit from Barcelona and the Italian theatre Teatro Excelsior from Reggello in Tuscany, Italy. Playing a Part combines Life Long Learning with theatre in a playful way while simultaneously exploring issues of multilingualism and minorities. The project went on for two years, from August 2013 to July 2015, and was divided into two parts: a series of workshops organised in all partner countries and the creation of a new play that was also performed in the three countries.

A series of workshops

The Playing a Part workshops were primarily destined to unemployed people without a university degree. They addressed different themes around the creation process in theatre. The topics included research of ideas, writing and promoting the play 99%. Beside conveying new competences, the workshops also created the opportunity for an exchange of ideas in a multicultural and multilingual context.

the play – 99%

Based on stories and situations developed during the workshops dealing with the concept of minority versus majority and the idea of multilinguism, Ian De Toffoli and Elies Barberà wrote a play composed of different vignette scenes. This multilingual play was called 99% and directed by Anne Simon. It was performed by Claire Thill from ILL and the five actors from Teatre de l’Enjòlit: Albert Alemany, Elies Barberà, Jenny Beacraft, Arnau Marín and Marta Montiel. The rehearsals took place in Barcelona in September and October 2014. Three open rehearsals concluded this first working phase. An international tour with 15 performances (800 spectators) took place between January to May 2015. The official opening was at Théâtre municipal d’Esch-sur-Alzette on January 21st 2015.

Numerous partners and sponsors

Other than the three main partners, this project has brought together a lot of different partners: co-producers, Théâtre municipal d’Esch-sur-Alzette and Théâtre National du Luxembourg ; a hosting theatre, Teatre Akadèmia (E) ; partners for organising the workshops and associated events, Centre culturel Kulturfabrik d’Esch-sur-Alzette and Centre Català de Luxemburg ; and of course many sponsors whose support made the project financially viable: the European Programme Grundtvig, Ministère de la Culture, Fonds Culturel National, Œuvre Nationale de Secours G-D Charlotte, Fondation Veuve Emile Metz-Tesch, Fondation Indépendance and the city of Esch-sur-Alzette.
